If you want to do Austin right, you need the proper accoutrements—and that means cowboy boots and hats. Fortunately, the city has a number of great shops where you can find these essential Texas fashion statements, as well as belts, snap-button shirts, and more.

Allens Boots

You can’t miss the iconic big red boot above the doorway at this landmark South Congress Avenue shop, which opened in 1977. It’s probably Austin’s most famous store of any kind, with a truly impressive selection of ornate name-brand boots. (Be prepared for some sticker shock, as some pairs can approach $1,000.) Peep the Wall of Fame for celebrity customers such as Faith Hill and Sam Elliott.

Heritage Boot Co.

Just a few blocks below Allens on South Congress, this store offers handmade, custom-quality, mid-century-style boots that are available only on-site. Other artisan items on offer at the Heritage Boot Mercantile include wallets, belts, and a collection of attractive metal accessories.

Tiny’s Western Shop

This family-run North Austin Western apparel shop has been in business for more than 50 years. Boots are available, but the highlights here are the custom cowboy hats and the great selection of Western shirts and jackets. There are even options for kids!

Tecovas started out as an online-only business dedicated to offering handmade cowboy boots at prices that didn’t break the bank. The brand has since opened a small chain of storefronts throughout Texas, with the original on South Congress Avenue, where you can see the fruits of the bootmakers’ labor (as well as some accessories) up close.

Room Service Vintage

One of the oldest and best vintage shops in Austin, this large North Loop shop actually specializes in mid-century furniture, but it’s also home to floor-to-ceiling shelves and racks bursting with tchtchkes, housewares, and - you guessed it - Western wear, including cowboy boots and hats.
