Abbi Jacobson stars on The Mitchells vs. the Machines, now streaming on Netflix
When I was 17, my dad took my brother and me on a dory boat expedition in the Grand Canyon. It was an adult trip with his friends from high school and college and we got to tag along. For 11 days we rowed in these wooden boats, slept on the beach next to the Colorado River and went on hikes. Every moment was breathtaking. My dad took me out of school for 10 days in order to go on this trip and I almost failed my English class because of it. I felt like I was in a movie!
I’ve only been to Greece once, when I took my mom for her 60th birthday. I was in the middle of writing season three of Broad City, but we snuck away for five days to Athens and Santorini. She had always wanted to go to Greece and it was very special because this was the first time I could do something so meaningful for her. We did a lot of sightseeing in Athens, and in Santorini we enjoyed a catamaran tour around the island. We tried to eat as much seafood as physically possible. The cliffside dinners were stunning and so, so delicious. Funnily enough, one night at dinner someone recognized my mom! They knew her from the farmers market where she works back home.
Ghent and Bruges
I have two best friends from home, and since we don’t live near each other anymore we try to take a trip together every year. In 2015, one of us took a job in Belgium and was going through a rough time. I decided to visit and devised a plan to have both of us show up. We surprised her on the sidewalk and took her to Ghent and Bruges for three days. We mostly just wandered through the residential areas to see the quaint streets, drank and had a big catch-up about each other’s lives and a big gossip session about everyone else!
I stopped in Marfa, Texas, as part of my New York-to-Los Angeles road trip. I had never been before, but I have gone back since. Nothing obstructs the horizon, and the sprawling landscape makes the West Texas sky feel bigger than anywhere else. I stayed at a hotel called El Cosmico, which has all these refurbished Airstream trailers. I rented a bike and spent the day exploring the town. I also had dinner at a friend’s ranch where we all took turns taking a photo in the same spot. That night the moon was so stunning that everyone welcomed her appearance with a round of applause.
In the fall of 2018, I was in Boulder, Colorado, to shoot the final few episodes of Broad City. It’s an interesting little town and so crunchy. That’s why we picked it for the show, because it’s just so granola. One afternoon we drove 15 minutes outside of the city and went on this gorgeous hike. It was only for an hour, but we took time to mark the end of the show.
