As school districts across the U.S. begin the academic year with home-based online learning, hotels and resorts are providing productive working environments with the perks of a family vacation. Once parents log off for the day and the kids finish their homework, these properties’ long stay packages offer extracurricular activities ranging from cooking and fitness classes to PE on the beach and outdoor adventure workshops. Here, five resorts that give kids a break between or after class.
Eden Roc Cap Cana
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
The white-sand beaches of Punta Cana typically attract travelers on all too brief weekend cruises, but the Eden Roc Cap Cana, on the Dominican Republic’s east coast, is prepared to accommodate travel pods for extended stays in its luxury suites and villas. The waterfront property's new “family staycation” package allows for a visit from anywhere between 20 to 30 days, with Spanish and piano lessons included for the kids.
The Ritz-Carlton Naples
Less than one hour south of Fort Myers, with gulf views on Southwest Florida’s Paradise Coast, it would be hard not to relax during a stay at The Ritz-Carlton Naples. But if the little ones are feeling the pressures of online learning, the resort’s new Junior Artisan Academy offers a respite with 20- to 30-minute breakout classes including Mini Meditation (an expert-led mindful meditation session on the beach), Green Thumb (lessons on growing vegetables and flowers), Re-Think PE (guided beach runs, lap swimming, bike riding or basketball in the tea garden) and Bon Appétit (cooking classes for young chefs in training). All sessions can be booked for either one-on-one experiences or small groups.
Monarch Beach Resort
Dana Point, California
Guests at this SoCal resort, just 25 miles southeast of Santa Ana, can request an additional room to use as a classroom or home-away-from-home office at no extra cost. The package also includes one hour of complimentary homework help and an optional boxed lunch for pupils who prefer to study poolside. For extracurriculars, the resort’s Dana Point Discoveries offerings encourage guests to familiarize themselves with the surrounding area through self-guided trail hikes, surf lessons, fitness classes and other immersive activities.
Gravity Haus Breckenridge
There’s an educational bent to Breck Haus, a boutique lodging option located at the base of Breckenridge mountain at the world-famous eponymous ski resort. The property’s in-house Colorado Adventure Guides, who work on the slopes as ski patrollers, avalanche educators and more, have led guests on hiking, biking, skiing, climbing and rafting experiences in the area for two decades. Families should be sure to attend a few of the resort’s workshops—including a Rock 101/Knots & Anchors Clinic, a Mountain Skills & Safety Course and Map & Compass 101—before hitting the slopes after the school day is done.
The Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island
Amelia Island, Florida
Located on Florida’s Atlantic coast 45 minutes northeast of Jacksonville, Amelia Island provides the ideal setting for hands-on environmental learning. For students who may be missing more interactive schooling, The Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island has partnered with The Reef Institute–a coral-reef conservation organization—to develop a five-day, four-night educational program that connects children to nature. Participants will explore marine ecology and biology, learn about the barrier island on which the resort sits, and take part in kayaking excursions and dune explorations.
