In the blink of an eye our world has changed. We’re more than a year into a global pandemic, an international economic crisis, and the inability to find a good movie on Netflix in less than 21 seconds.
It’s staggering that hundreds of millions of people across the world have experienced some form of city-, state- or government-related shutdown. Yet the greatest shutdown I have personally witnessed over the past 14 months has been the shutdown of the human spirit. As a men’s performance coach, I’ve directly coached and had conversations with hundreds of the most successful men in the world and many covid-related patterns emerged.
As a result of the lockdowns, we have become more sedentary in our day-today existence (i.e., more sitting down, less exercise). We’ve carried the ineffective nutrition habits of our busy pre-pandemic lifestyle into our current life (food delivery and emotional eating). Many of us never developed effective interpersonal relationship habits before covid, so for many couples and families lockdowns felt like imprisonment. The shutdowns didn’t just make us lose our income. Many people lost their daily reason to thrive.
Today, as we slowly transition beyond the pandemic, I want to share a secret weapon that will help propel you into a powerful future. Inspire yourself. Become your own influencer. Be your own thought leader by leading your own thoughts.
This secret weapon lives inside a simple yet powerful principle. What’s the secret weapon? The 21/90 Principle.
The 21/90 Principle states that it takes 21 days of inspired, committed daily action to change a habit and 90 days of inspired, committed daily action to create a lifestyle. The secret weapon is inspired, committed daily action—a simple premise that when applied without deviation can be transformative.
Ask yourself: Would it benefit you to exercise for one hour every day for the next 21 days? How about 90 days? Would it benefit me to directly tell the people whom I love how grateful I am for their existence for the next 21 days? How about 90 days? Would it benefit me to invest one dollar (or more) into a celebration account for myself, for the next 21 days? How about the next 90 days?
This is not me challenging you. This is you challenging you to commit to three simple actions for the next 21 days.
Here’s the 21/90 Challenge:
- Exercise: Move, lift, run or walk for 21 days.
- Gratitude: Verbally tell your loved ones how grateful you are for 21 days.
- Invest: Invest in a celebration fund, which you will put to use in 21 days.
If you’re really feeling spirited, do it for 90 days. Take my client Asher, who had lost almost everything by the time we connected. With the 21/90 Principle we helped him find his purpose and passion. Then we helped him lose something else—34 pounds.
The 21/90 rule has a simple caveat: It must be followed every single day. There are no days off in the 21/90 Principle because if you are doing something that will transform your life, why would you stop the momentum? The 21/90 Principle is simple. The commitment is the challenge. But there is no greater commitment than being committed to yourself.
