The Grand Canyon is a place of staggering immensity, and its story is best told through its numbers. One of the seven natural wonders of the world, the canyon stretches 277 miles with a maximum width of 18 miles and a depth of up to 6,000 feet. Some six million travelers visited the national park last year, and there are almost as many different ways to explore the area, from hiking and rafting to mule rides and photo shoots on a crowded rim viewpoint. Once you’ve gotten your fill of one of the most beautiful spots on the planet, make time to experience the gateway city of Flagstaff. This vibrant Route 66 outpost was named the world’s first International Dark Sky City, and it’s a perfect location from which to take in the beauty of the cosmos. Hey, after all that time looking down into the canyon, your neck could use a stretch anyway.
